The Pacific Northwest has been getting hammered lately, with all sorts of stormy news from Whistler, Baker and beyond. Turns out Mother Nature hasn’t forgotten about the island either…

Mount Washington Alpine Resort received a memorable November snow lambasting over the last two weeks. With more snow in the forecast for the next few days, the resort announced today that it will open for winter operations on Saturday, November 28th, two full weeks before the originally scheduled opening day of December 11th.

“The systems have been lining up perfectly over the last 14 days,” says resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “And the forecast is calling for an additional 50 to 70 centimetres this week! This is great news for all of our season passholders and 6ixPak ticket holders.”

Mount Washington is currently reporting a 60 centimetre base as of Monday, November 16th, a total that is expected grow significantly with each passing weather system.

“We usually see some decent snowfall in November,” Curtain explains. “But what we’re seeing so far is unbelievable! The snow we’ve received is forming an excellent early-season base and we’re stoked to see our fourth November opening in the last seventeen years.”

The resort’s early opening was facilitated in part by extensive summer grooming. Over the summer months, Mount Washington’s trail crew brush cut the entire front side of the mountain and a significant portion of the Outback. This project sought to improve overall trail conditions and provide the opportunity to open more terrain earlier than in previous winters.

Mount Washington plans to reveal all alpine lift and terrain openings plus nordic trail openings after seeing what this week’s weather delivers.

The early opening announcement and stellar winter conditions are coupled with a great deal for heading up the mountain. The resort’s 6ixPak lift ticket booklets are available at early bird rates until November 30th. This year Mount Washington includes a free day of riding in April with the purchase of your 6ixPak.

“This is the perfect time to grab a 6ix Pak at our discounted November rates, it’s the best deal in lift tickets,” explains Don Sharpe, Director of Business Operations. “You can pick one up at any Thrifty Foods location or buy online at www.mountwashington.ca.”
