Lake Louise Big Mountain Challenge Wrap Up

Categories

This weekend wrapped up my first experience at the Lake Louise Big Mountain Challenge and I am stoked to have been a part of this event. Using the tried and true formula of awesome skiing and a spectacular after party, Lake Louise provided a great weekend for many.

A field of about 60 competitors made it out to the best of the rockies for the 10th annual skiing fest. Fresh snow, wind and fog made for a variable event that tested the best of the lot. The obvious highlight of the weekend goes to the entire Women’s Skiing category.

A stacked field of girls, that would make any man shake in their boots, showed Lake Louise what skiing was all about. Obvious backgrounds in racing and freestyle were revealed with perfect technique throughout the entire field. Fast charging turns and large stomped airs were plentiful. With hard, fast skiing comes bails; Laura Sliva was the first to step up to the infamous rock ride of ER 7 but hit the flat landing a little to square and tomahawked out. The most notable crash goes to Ellie Dalton, who came mach chicken towards the finish corral and exploded off a mogul like a cat thrown from a 3rd story window, right towards the judges.

The men’s skiing had a variety of talent from many first timers to slopestyle competitors. Being the last to drop each day, the men dealt with some of the worst foggy conditions but some memorable runs were made. Recent Mt. Seymour-Canadian Shield Slopestyle-top finisher Cam Smith charged the hard throughout the weekend. He showed off his freestyle background with a large 3 and some Sean Petit-esque lofty airs that bounced down the mountain. Squeaking into first place, from Revelstoke BC, was Foster Kennedy. He earned the top spot with some strategic fast paced skiing that linked many hits down both ER faces.

The boarders had a tougher time with the choppy conditions but were able to shine in the style category with many huge methods and plenty of 3’s. Most notable being Seb Grondin’s massive corked boarder helicopter spin off the top of ER 3. Unfortunately, Seb went down hard after coming out on his feet into a mogul.  Michelle Locke repeated her win of the Women’s Boarder category with solid riding on both days.

My new favourite way to view a competition is from the judges tent while being force fed hot chocolate, wrapped in a down sleeping bag. Big thanks go out to Dave Petch and Brenna Spademan of Lake Louise for putting on a great event and taking care of everyone involved.
