2011 Smith Optics Big Mountain Challenge Just Begun at Lake Louise

The 2011 Smith Optics Lake Louise Big Mountain Challenge kicked off today with 37 competitors skiing, grinding, hucking and "feeling" their way down ER 3 in very flat light and white out conditions with abundant fresh snow. Of these 37 competitors, an unprecedented 14 of them are female. Also notable is the calibre of skiing that was thrown down today, given the conditions. Most of the field played it smart and stayed on their feet with a mere 3 girls falling, and 3 or 4 men facing similar fate. Because of the conditions and the small total number of competitors the judges have decided to allow the entire field to continue to Day 2 of the competition. It's all going down on ER 3 on Friday, so be there.

Day 1 Results – Top 3 men

1 Ben Ogilvie 34.57
2 Iwan Williams 33.37
3 Thomas Wilson 32.60

Day 1 Results – Top 3 women

1 Alleta Corbett 26.93
2 Paula Moore 26.60
3 Meagan Klassen 25.40

The perks of competing in this event are off the hook. There were daily prizes for every competitor, and given that the entry fee is only $100, plus an additional $100 for a 5 day lift pass and almost 2:1 male to female ratio, a $7500 prize purse and fun times guaranteed… why aren't YOU here?

A big thank you to Daniel for coordinating this event, the main sponsors Smith and Blizzard, and ski patrol for their control work and help.
