Full Moon Skiing on Paul Ridge

Rating

Gotta get your fix somehow. So amidst a not very powdery week in the Whistler area and a few days at the day job, we took advantage of the full moon and went for a stroll up to Paul Ridge in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Aiming for anything better than bullet proof, we actually scored some quality ankle deep pow. Not to mention the epic moonlight views and a scrumptious dinner on the Ridge.

We weren't alone. Four or 5 groups could be seen here and there in the distance, little white lights zigzagging down the hill like headlights on a bad night of driving under the influence. Or something like that.

It's pretty cool up there at night, and it was so bright you could have easily shredded some steeps if there were any to be had. Maybe next time it's Fissile by full moon...

Here's a bunch of tacky attempts at night photography:

TGR in Squamish - Kees & Claire Fundraiser

Rating

Yes that's right... TGR's Lost & Found Premiere is coming to Squamish, and for a very special occasion. Shredders and friends alike will be be flocking to Squamish Saturday, November 10, to celebrate the lives of our good friends Kees Brenninkmeyer and Claire Dixon who sadly lost their lives in a backcountry touring accident last winter. All proceeds are going to a fund to build a backcountry hut in their name. And knowing the lives of Kees & Claire, this is going to have to be one hell of a hut! So we'd better start raising funds for a memorial hut like none other...

Details for how to donate without coming to the show will be on this page soon, keep checking, and thanks to everyone for the support.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS...

Event: Kees & Claire's Winter Kick-Off Party

What: Fundraiser event, TGR's Lost & Found Film premiere, and live music from Animal Names & Hermetic

When: Saturday Nov 10. Doors at 9pm, show at 9:30pm.

Where: Howe Sound Brewing Co, Squamish, BC

Why: To raise funds for an awesome project, celebrate the lives of Kees & Claire, get our winter stoke on, and why the hell not?

Tickets: $15 at the door. Includes cover for the whole night (movie & band)

MORE ABOUT THE FILM:

LOST AND FOUND is the story of the extraordinary season of 2006.07 as seen through the eyes of world-class skiers and snowboarders. With global drought persisting and ski resorts closing around the world, athletes are forced to follow the snow, sending them deep into the uncharted north country of Alaska and Canada – including of course – the Whistler area. Filmed almost entirely in North America, LOST AND FOUND is a testament to the terrain and conditions that only exist in the Western Hemisphere.

It wouldn’t be complete without mind-blowing performances by some of our favourite Whistler athletes, Ian McIntosh, Dana Flahr, Kye Petersen, and Victoria Jealouse. McIntosh returns to try one-upping the films best breakthrough performance in last year’s film – his own – while Flahr is pumped on his return from injuries, and it shows. Once again, the Whistler crew pretty much shows the pros how we rock here in Whistler, and well, how last winter rocked us.

This film will take you into the vast, unexplored Tordrillo Mountains of Alaska, proving that some of the best big mountain riding in the world is still completely undiscovered. Athletes take advantage of the bountiful winter in British Columbia, hit disturbing park features in Aspen and score over-the-head powder pillows at Skeena Heliskiing. The winter of 2007 was feast or famine; LOST AND FOUND documents the feast.

VIEW THE TEASER>>>

Sponsored by: JEEP, The North Face, Rossignol, Dynastar/Lange, Powder Magazine, Recco, Apple, Outside Magazine, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Burton

Paul Ridge, Squamish

Rating

With all the snow in the alpine we've been reading about on the Whistler site, it was definately time to get up and check it out. The location - Paul Ridge, Squamish. The posse - myself, Marcott, Andre, Mathieu, Tobin, and Shabut. Actually, Andre wasn't really part of the posse, of course he was hung over and even more tardy than us. By the time the crew of early season slackers reached the alpine, there was likely 125cm new, and it was heavy. Skiing turned less turning, and more HUMPING down the hill.

Marlowe dropping in.

Tobin: I think that was the most work every for 400ft of vertical

Shabut: By the way, that wasn't skiing

Mathieu: That was humping.

Andre, Matt and Chabot skinning up.

Rider: Pat Mulrooney Photo: Danielle Balik

The clear skies and warm temps melted the snow and allowed for one more high mountain ride for the season. I hadn't ridden Brohm Ridge in over 10 years and forgot how much climbing there was to the Warren Glacier. It is by far one of the quickest ways into the high alpine of Garibaldi Park. Unreal views of Squamish and all the peaks surrounding Garibadi Lake. Once your at the roads end there are perfect singletracks through-out the meadows. I'll be back with the winter equipment in a few months. Check out the pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/patmulrooney/sets/72157594296973756/

Rating

Winter can take it's sweet time. We know it's coming, so why not stay summer until the last minute, then switch to winter on a dime. Why?

Just got my hands on some kite gear and finally got a chance to get out on the water at The Spit in Squamish. Damn, what a sport. Not many other sports where you can chuck 100ft airs on a whim, where you actually have to try to stay on the earth (or water), and can go absolutely silly speeds with the flick of a wrist (ok, not including crotch rockets).

If you haven't tried it yet, do. Head to the spit, take a lesson, or follow suit and get a crazy french canadian to insult you until you get good. Either way, it's good fun. More dirt on kite boarding at www.skypilotkiteboarding.com.

Jamie Bond trying out a new off-season way to abuse himself.

Goofy photo of Mathieu Miller, but rest assured, he rips on his home-made kite board, and yes, he will whip us up into shape whether we like it or not.

Oh... found a better one to add.

Jamie and I got hitched!

Rating

Yep, just a few weeks ago, I married the doglotion mastermind himself, Jamie Bond. I am proud to announce that I am an official 'Bond girl!'. Secretly, I married him just for the name... As the ceremony was held at a rocky river bank in Squamish, Jamie of course had his grand entrance floating down the river in an inner tube wearing a dry suit over his wedding suit! Crazy guy. But what was even crazier was our wedding cake!

Doglotion’s photographer Jordan Manley did a fantastic job as our wedding photographer, but you can't see the photos because Jamie just deleted the link.
