The first day of the Silver King Freeride went down today in snowy conditions, thank the heavens. Under the few inches of new snow is icy hardpack which is really sweet, especially for the snowboard competitors who only have one edge. The riding was strong, smooth yet aggressive with a dash of contrallability, a splash of garlic, and without anyone smashing themselves.

The second round of qualifiers will be held tomorow on either the snorting elk venue once again or on the throne. Blazer (Alex Blais), last years winner, didn't show up today. The french in him must be turning him into a girly man. I guess the bouncers will have to find someone else to throw out of the bar 3-4 times on saturday.

The Silver King freeride is organized by Mountain Challenge (mountainchallenge.org) with support from Sturtevant's, Boarderline Snowboards, K2 sports, Monkey Rides, Clearly Lasik, Fuel TV, Sports Legs, Zeal Optics, Scott, Adhost Internet, Nordica, and Phiten USA.

Mt. Baker Opens Thursday

Mt Baker is opening this Thursday November 16th 2006! Woot! Their base is up 178cm deep at the top according to snow report.

The report on their side says:

We had another one roll through yesterday and last night, leaving us another 14 INCHES OF NEW SNOW. Since Saturday morning, we have had 53 INCHES OF NEW SNOW!

Ski area rope lines are going up today, chair lift ramps are being groomed and prepped and base areas are receiving stocking shipments.

We are still going with our OPENING DAY OF THURSDAY NOVEMBER 16, as we are continuing to watch Tuesday night/Wednesdays system which looks like it is carrying A LOT of precip. . . . and possibly some warm air with it. We need to see how this system affects the snowpack and since the forecasts are calling for a rapidly lowering freezing level later on Wednesday, THURSDAY still looks like our day.

I'm stoked. I'll think about it...sitting in my office...staring out the window at Grouse Mtn. Rumors have it that Whistler will open Sat Nov 18th. But I got bad info that for today...cough...Sam! So no promises.
