3 Deaths at Perisher

Australia and New Zealand have been enjoying plenty of precip this year with a great snowpack, but things turned sideways at Perisher this weekend. 3 separate unrelated skier deaths occurred, including two avalanches and a tree collision.

A local Australian paper has more details about the recent accidents.

Red Mountain Junior Freeskiing Comp

Fifty-nine Junior competitors this week (Jan 8th, 2007) completed the first leg of the 2007 Canadian Open Freeskiing Championship presented by Ledcor in harsh weather conditions.

High winds and snow didn’t curb the enthusiasm of this new generation of Freeskiing athletes. The skiers charged in steeps on Red Mountain Resort’s Link’s Line run with excellent snow conditions. The tunes were cranking, the spirits were high and the skiing was spectacular.

The top qualifiers had two competition runs and the scores from both runs were added to determine the final score.

Copper Hosts The Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open

The top names in freeskiing converge on Copper Mountain to compete for a total prize purse of $60,000.00 during the Jeep® U.S. Freeskiing Open Jan. 17-21. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Open is the largest, longest running and most respected contest in freeskiing and showcases the best twin-tipped talent in the world. In addition to the two-plank snow sliding action, Copper celebrates January in the mountains with free live music, warm bonfires, exciting fireworks, free outdoor movies, sponsor giveaways and more.

Over 300 athletes compete in three disciplines including: Slopestyle, Superpipe, and Big Air. Slopestyle events take place in Copper’s Catalyst Terrain Park January 17-19. Snow sliding spectators may access the Slopestyle venue by skiing or riding from the Highpoint or American Flyer Chairlifts to the Catalyst Terrain Park. Walking spectators may access the venue by purchasing a foot passenger lift ticket for $15, available at any ticket window, that allows upload access via the Highpoint Chairlift. They may then walk downhill, along the designated foot passenger lanes, to view the competition before proceeding to the base area on foot. Spectators not skiing or riding are encouraged to wear proper cold-weather clothing and boots with good traction.

The Superpipe and Big Air events take place in and just below the Main Vein Superpipe January 20-21. Both venues are near the base of the American Eagle Chairlift and Burning Stones Plaza and do not require mountain access as they can be viewed from anywhere in Copper’s Center Village. Spectators can also hike up the mountain along the special foot path designated by signage and blue ropes. The Big Air competition gets underway just after sundown on Saturday and continues throughout the early evening. Superpipe semifinals and finals complete the week’s events throughout Sunday.

Following the competitions on both Friday and Saturday are a number of options for spectators and guests to continue the fun at Copper. After the Slopestyle finals on Friday, guests can enjoy free live music with DJ Knucklz, a free outdoor screening of the director’s cut of Warren Miller's upcoming movie entitled “57” and sponsor giveaways on Copper’s West Lake. Saturday features a free performance with Boulder’s Rose Hill Drive as well as fireworks over the mountain. In addition, following both days events are a number of after parties throughout the Village at Copper.

New Generation Events - Sweden

The Swedes are at it again, here's their New Generation Events release...

It rocked last year, and you would be a fool to miss it this year. The New Generation Events will be the most elaborate ski event of the season in all of Scandinavia and possibly all of Europe. The New Generation Events return for the third consecutive year, as part of the FIS Alpine World Championships 2007 in Åre, Sweden.

Kicking off the Events is the Slopestars taking place at night during the opening weekend of the Championships. The Super Heroes of freestyle skiing will compete for 10 000 euros in prize money, in front of what is to be expected a crowd of thousands. Jon Olsson, local skier and also the designer of the course on contributing to the event: I´m stoked to get the opportunity to show my skills to the traditional alpine ski community of the world. This will be another twisted super event in Åre!

February the 4th brings one of the greatest snow mobile shows to be witnessed this season in Scandinavia to Åre 2007, The Snow Cross. Six sled riders per race will compete head to head in an action packed course designed by local SnowX rider Frank Huss. The motor action is continued on February the 13th with the Snow Mobile Big Air also in the festival area.

The Mogul Manifest takes place during the second week of the World Championships. A prize purse of 10 000 euros and the world’s best athletes in the discipline guarantee this to be an awe-inspiring event. The comp takes place at night complemented by fantastic music and eye-catching visuals.

All of the New Generation Events are free entry, and will definitely be a highlight of the FIS Alpine World Championships 2007. Taking place only five minutes walk from the town square the events are expected to attract swarms of international media as well as a crowd of thousands.

Snowing in Whistler - Game On

Sept. 15. It's on. Snowing in Whistler. We were wearing shorts in 27 degree weather a couple days ago, and now this? hells ya.

Over 15 centimetres was measured this morning at the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain (1,850 metres/6,069 feet), and as snow covers the mountains all our brains are squirming with thoughts of winter ahead. Are you ready?

Time to get off the couch, start pounding some protein shakes, go on long runs (uphill both ways) with your fridge strapped to your back, and get stoked. Get your pass, get pumped, score some gear, and we'll see ya'll on opening day.

Cardrona Resort Morphs Into Snow Sports Arena

Cardrona Alpine Resort is this week being transformed into a snow sports arena as final preparations take place before the inaugural Coca-Cola Cardrona Games kick off on Thursday.

FMX and snowmobile jumps are being constructed, the scaffolding for the TV towers is going up, sound systems are being installed and athletes are hurrying in to register for the competition, which carries a $45,000 cash prize pool, Cardrona sales and marketing manager Bruce McGechan said.

“Most people think of pipes, berms and rails when they think of freestyle snow sports competitions, but there is so much more to the Coca Cola Cardrona Games. It’s a party or celebration of snow sports that marks this competition from other competitions in New Zealand. The music, FMX, and snowmobile big air all near our iconic archway is what helps make this so exciting for the audience,” McGechan said.

The most-watched head-to-head competition will be X-Games gold medallist Tanner Hall versus New Zealand’s own Jossi Wells in the double halfpipe competition. At the age of 16, Wells is New Zealand’s number one freestyle skier, and this could be the event where he beats the X-Games superstar.

The double halfpipe event on Friday, September 8 is tipped to outshine all other halfpipe competitions in the country, with competitors expecting to boost more than 7m out of the superpipe and perform tricks such as complete 1080s (3 full rotations).

The slopestyle event on Saturday September 9 will have some surprises to really test the competitors, including a 16m-long, 3m-high “rainbow” rail near the top of the course. More aspects of the course will be revealed on the day.

Competitor numbers are rising every day for the Gravity X competition on Thursday September 7, with a number of Winter Olympians entering, including Wanaka’s Juliane Bray, UK’s Lesley McKenna, as well as X-Games gold medallist Nate Holland (USA).

Snowmobiling legend Chris Brown arrives in Queenstown from Colorado today to start practicing for his snowmobile big air demonstrations, which take place at the end of each day’s competition, along with the Moto FMX demonstrations. Salmonella Dub DJ Sound System will be playing live each day of the competition.

Last winter a no-name Whistler local took the freeski world by storm and ended the season 0.2 points away from winning the IFSA Freesking World Champion Title. At the US National Championships he became the only skier to ever win the coveted SICK BIRD belt and a first place title in the same comp. We caught up with Jonny Law to find out what he eats for breakfast, how he skis so hard, and what he's got lined up for this winter...

I just saw a picture of a 'Monoboot' in the newspaper that can be used on monoskis. Is that the future of skiing?

Yes...There's no question about it...wait a minute...how do you walk around in a Monoboot?

How does a skier from Nova Scotia end up ripping with the best of them?

I guess I'm a product of my experiences and... genetics? Ski racing, supportive parents and great friends helped me develop the skills and frame of mind that a person needs to ski hard. This is definitely an abstract thought, but I like to define big mountain freeskiing as an attitude and not as a level of skill or a description of terrain. I was a big mountain freeskier long before I had even seen a real mountain. In the end it comes down to taking the hits, trial and error, learning how to fall but mostly spirit.

On the freeskiing scene, it seems like you came out of nowhere and annihilated the competition on last year's IFSA World Tour of Freeskiing. What's the secret? Training? Eating too many Wheaties? What?

Last summer I had an epiphany...maybe a breakdown. Whatever it was I found myself overhauling my lifestyle. I quit smoking, gained 15lbs, ran everyday and only left my room when I had to. Realizing my potential as a skier was all I thought about and I let nothing compromise my focus. There is a big difference between being a good skier and being a professional athlete. I did the math and figured out the difference.

After a good result in Whistler you must have been amped! What kept you focused and skiing hard for the other stops on the Tour?

The comp actually didn't go very well for me. Day one I landed in a bomb-hole, bending my ski and breaking my fullface over my knee. I was able to keep going but the incident really hurt my score. On the final day a young man took his life on the highway between where I was living and Whistler. The tragedy closed the highway and prevented me from inspecting the venue. I had no choice but to use binoculars to determine my line and improve to make it work. The 11th place result made me realize that I had a good chance of being competitive if I could pull it together.

In the end, you missed being the overall World Tour champion by the tiniest fraction. Frustrating or motivating?

I will admit that it was hard to swallow the final results. 86.8 vs. 86.6...0.2 points denied me of not only a victory at the World Tour Finals in France but the overall World Tour Championship Title. Nothing has ever tasted so bitter sweet...I'm stoked though because there's room for improvement, I have something more to accomplish.

I gather Dynastar has been pretty pimp-daddy nice to their new freeride team members, did this open any doors for you this winter?

Dynastar is really excited by the success that the entire team has been creating. From filming to competing, the team has represented and helped Dynastar re-establish its position among the elite in North America. Moss Patterson, Dana Flahr, Colin Puskas and I have been joined by Mike Stevenson and Karla Rizutto while team snowmobiles have been acquired that will aid in the movement and help maximize our efforts. Thanks to everyone at Dynastar who share the vision and passion.

What did you get up to this summer? Mad training or couch surfing and beer-gut farming?

Mostly training, eating and computing. Rope swinging, research and development with Dynastar, family time in Nova Scotia, Def Leopard and Rainbow Park filled in the _ _ _ _ _ _.

Should we watch out for you in any flicks this fall?

Nah-It was tough to film last season while balancing a job and dealing with competitive tunnel vision. This season will be focused equally on filming and competing though. My goal is to gain an understanding of my style and find out how to showcase it in film. In the meantime you will be able to checkout www.jonnylaw.com which is coming soon. Now that the snow is falling again, we reckon you should go steal back the Tour Championship title for Canada. What do ya reckon? Give those boyz another run for their money?
