Crabtree on Podium at Snowbird Freeskiing Competition

Rating

Whistler shredder and Doglotion favourite Brett Crabtree has earned another podium for the season. Not on top like Crested Butte, but hey, he had to give someone else a chance. Here's what went down at Snowbird...

After an extraordinarily exciting day of skiing, Jaclyn Passo of Squaw Valley, CA, wins the women’s title and Dylan Crossman takes first in the stacked international men’s division, as the 11th Annual Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals concluded today on North Baldy at Snowbird Ski Resort, Utah.

The women’s field represented one of the deepest talent pools in Subaru U.S. Freeskiing National’s 11-year history. Sitting in seventh place going into the super final rounds this afternoon, Jaclyn Passo of Squaw Valley, California, had nearly four points to make up in order to reach the podium. Judges rewarded Passo for sending it off the same big double-stager that many of the men looked to as an exit out of the amphitheatre, catapulting her into first place with a total score of 104.44. Crystal Wright of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, moved from fifth to finish second overall with 103.13 points, and last year’s winner Jess McMillan of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, rounded out the podium with 115.13 points.

“I got so close to a win at Squaw after leading the first day, but I went for too big off a jump on day two,” said women’s winner Jaclyn Passo. “At Crested Butte, the same scenario unfolded, so it’s pretty sweet to finally see this come together. I wasn’t planning on going to Alyeska, Alaska, for the tour finals, but now I may have to.” said Passo.

The men’s super final rounds were simply incredible today as less than 12 points separated all 18 competitors who advanced. Current Freeskiing World Tour points leader Brett Crabtree of Whistler, B.C., tightened the grip on his points lead, pioneering a new line and dropping a cliff which no other competitor attempted, placing third overall with 115.13 points. With less than a point separating Kevin O’Meara of Squaw Valley, California, from first position, the title seemed like it could be his for the taking. O’Meara’s smooth spread eagle off Blonde Rock and technical double drop near the finish appeared to be enough to take the lead, but there was still one man left at the start line. Although he was on alpine gear, the five-time telemark champion of the Crested Butte Extremes, Dylan Crossman, had an incredible and hesitation-free super final run, which earned him the second highest scoring run of the competition. Combined with the highest scoring run of the day, which also went to Crossman earlier today, Crossman solidified his victory with123.28 total points. Kevin O’Meara finished second with119.50 points.

“I knew I had to pull out all the stops, there was nothing to lose in the super finals, so I just went for it,” said the 2008 Subaru US Freeskiing Nationals men’s champion Dylan Crossman.

As always, spectators enjoyed watching freeskiing’s elite battle it out for the Tobias Lee Memorial Sickbird buckle award. The Sickbird award is presented to the competitor with the most spirited competition run, often involving super-human talent and agility. This week’s Sickbird buckle was awarded to Jaclyn Passo, whose aggressive super final run earned this huge honor, which has rarely been won by a female competitor.

The North Face Young Gun Award returns in 2008, honoring outstanding new talent in competitive freeskiing. Points accumulated throughout the season will crown one deserving under-21-year-old a full sponsorship from The North Face and the honor of becoming the next Young Gun winner. This stop’s winner was 18-year-old Brayden Brassey of Park City, Utah, who finished 5th overall.

The Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series and Freeskiing World Tour wraps up at The Subaru Freeskiing World Championships at Alyeska, AK, April 9-13, 2008. Past tour stops include the Subaru Telluride Freeskiing Open, the Subaru Squaw Valley U.S.A Freeskiing Open, the Jackson Hole Freeskiing Open, the Subaru US Extreme Freeskiing Championships at Crested Butte, CO.

Dogs Chasing Snowcats - In Too Much Snow

Rating

Is there such thing as too much snow? Unlikely, but we went to find out, and oh what a weekend it was. With a big juicy storm in the forecast, the Doglotion/VentureWeb crew packed our bags and headed up to visit our friends at Backcountry Snowcats, an awesome new(ish) cat skiing and riding operation just north of Whistler up on the Hurley Pass towards Bralorne. Owners Reg & Kathy Milne put blood, sweat, and tears into securing the tenure for the area, and these past 2 winters it's been paying off... in snow and good times.

With 15,000 acres all to themselves, and a retarded amount of new snow, things were looking good for us. Really good.

The weekend ruled before we even got to the lodge! Meeting at the base of the Hurley Pass road we were given a quiver of snowmobiles to bomb up the road in over a foot of fresh, at night. 3rd time riding a sled and mad faceshots were there for the taking anytime you drifted off the track.

Then out of nowhere came the lights from the Hurley Mountain lodge, where our warm beds and dinner venue were waiting.

With a ridiculous amount of new snow already out there and more overnight, it wasn't hard to wake anyone up in the morning. After a good feed we did the usual avalanche beacon practice, then hopped in the cat and went 'plowing'. You know it's going to be a deep weekend of skiing when the snowcat itself is getting faceshots...

With a high avi danger and deep roads to be plowed, we faired pretty good on day one, bagging some awesome runs through the burnt badlands trees and mid mountain gulleys.

But then came day two! Better stability, sun peeking out of the clouds and Kath's hard morning work of pre-plowing the roads before breakfast all paid off. Talk about good service.

We covered a bunch of different zones, every run better than the last, with glades, pillows, gulleys, chutes, small bowls, you name it. Oh and pow. Lots of it. No sign of a hardpack base no matter how deep you sunk... bringing true meaning to 'bottomless' pow.

With about 13,000 feet of vert for the day we wrapped it up before dark, super stoked on how much shredding we got on one of the shortest days of the year. With permagrins on everyone faces, we packed up to head for home, with amazing hospitality, good grub, and ridiculous ski memories all drifting through our heads.

The only consoling thought as the trip ended and we sledded back down to Pemberton, was of course... it's only going to be better when we come back in the spring. We'll be back, again, and again, until the snow dries up around the world and ski games on Ninetendo Wii is all we're left with. Until then, we, and you, should be making an annual pilgrimage to Backcountry Snowcats.

DETAILS

Location: Up on the Hurley Pass, just north of Pemberton
Getting There: Trips meet in Pemberton, just 2.5 hrs from Vancouver. It doesn't get any closer than that for a destination catskiing trip. From the meadows road in Pemberton, the snowmobile ride up the pass is a total bonus.

Price: What you get at a weekend with Backcountry Snowcats is a ridiculous bargain. Awesome value. Catskiing package details.
More Info: Check them out at www.snowcats.ca or 1-888-146-1111.

MSP Premiere of Seven Sunny Days

Rating

The World Premiere of MSP's Seven Sunny Days was off the hook, setting the tone for another epic winter, and more epic film premiere's to come.

Set outdoors in village square (aka awesome), on the warmest day of the fall (horse shoe up their #@$), a couple thousand people packed the area to watch the flick and cheer on the athletes in attendance.

Matchstick's athletes and stars of the film showed up to sign posters and meet and greet the mob of fans. Athletes included Sarah Burke, Mark Abma, Shane McConkey, Hugo Harrisson, TJ Schiller, Mike Douglas, Ingrid Backstrom, Chris Rubens, Eric Hjorleifson, CR Johnson, James Heim, and Rory Bushfield. The film's directors and cinematographers were also on site to share the enthusiasm.

And what better a place to watch it than Whistler, where pretty much all the athletes called home last winter, and those who didn't admitted they were suckers. The film documented some pretty epic shredding, some new faces, rad follow cam and sunset cinematography. All around good times.

Awesome to see Hjorleifson and Heimer break out into even more mad stardom, well deserved. Good shredding. The flying suirrel suits had the crowd going mental , and of course Shane Bond is our new idol.

We interrupt this article with a Red Carpet flick from RIP.TV...

If we had to play god and complain about anything, it would be Sarah Burke's totally girly segment (sex symbol or skier?), we prefered her as a skier. No offense to her, more to the editing. We know she rips, and she did bust some pretty huge moves. And the high jib content in the flick. It was rad, but straying from MSP's roots fo' shizzle.

"Seven Sunny Days" will be touring to a town near you this fall, check it out at www.skimovie.com.

Matchstick Productions would like to thank all of their sponsors for continued support: Helly Hansen, Subaru, Whistler Blackcomb, Nordica, Rush HD, Red Bull, Salomon, Powder, and New Era.

PS - apparently the after party at the GLC totally rocked, but we missed it, tragically. Just building up even more party angst to let out at the upcoming film premiere parties.

And here's some surreal pics...

Gaper Day 2007 - Coming June 3

Rating

The time has come. The moment we've all been waiting for. The reason this epic season of 0607 was even started in the first place. Yes for one glorious Day. Gaper Day 2007 - June 3rd on Blackcomb. Be there. 11am at Longhorn patio.

Who: Everyone who has a bad-ass outfit to show off, and likes sliding on snow

What: Retro/Gorbie/Gaper/You Name It. Dress better than your best Gorbie sighting ever, and come armed with rock skis to help progress sillygoat skiing and riding to the next level. Where that will take us, nobody knows.

When/Where: Sunday June 3rd. Last day of Blackcomb. Meet 11am at Longhorn patio.

Why: Some things in life can't be tamed, and shouldn't be held back for more than a year at a time. Oh yes, it's time to release your undying urge to bust out the skinny skis or monoboard and your favourite tight ski pants - and show the world what you were put on this earth to do.

We'll see you there. Tell all your friends. Hell, tell everyone. 11am, Sunday June 3rd, Longhorn Patio, then heading up Blackcomb. AFTER PARTY details to be released day of, or with a secret handshake. After all, we wouldn't want the riffraff to come out now would we?

While we're at it... some teases from Gaper Days' past. Enjoy...

Gaper Day 2003 (hot dogging, and gang bang skiing at it's finest)

Gaper Day 2004 (taking grass skiing to a new level)

Gaper Day 2005 (Rain, Survival suits, & Sasquatchs)

Gaper Day 2006 (Can it be topped? Yes that's a Challenge)

And a quick clip from '05...

Pro Photographer Showdown - Finalists Announced

Rating

Whistler is gearing up for a clash of the titans, when five of the world’s best lifestyle and action sports photographers compete in the tenth annual Pro Photographer Showdown at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, April 18 2007...

Chosen from a stellar showing of international submissions, the finalists for the tenth annual Showdown, hailing from Norway, Colorado, California, and Vancouver BC, were announced today.

The five selected photographers will be flown to Whistler for a gala presentation on April 18, 2007, lured by the bright lights of the Festival, the industry’s preeminent celebration of action and lifestyle photography and a $10,000 prize purse.

At the Pro Photographer Showdown, the most dynamic moments in action sports are captured and mounted, trophy-style, for an appreciative 2000-strong crowd in a series of self-curated 9 minute multimedia presentations.

The “Best of Show” designation conferred at the renowned photography expose will see the winner join an alumni that includes Kevin Zacher, Eric Berger and Aaron Chang, who will judge the Showdown alongside Whistler’s “King of Light” Paul Morrison, and long-time host of the Pro Photographer Search, writer and creative mastermind Leslie Anthony.

“The early years of the Showdown were simply our best friends shooting skiing and snowboarding. Now it's morphed into an iconic and unique celebration of action sports - surf, skate, bike, AND snow," says Jack Turner, Commissioner of the Pro Photographer Showdown. "The night of the Showdown is all about the passion and commitment to the culture of action sports whether you're a photographer, an athlete, or someone lucky enough to have a ticket to the show."

Throughout its ten year history, the Pro Photographer Showdown has featured stunning photography from renowned surf photographers Aaron Chang, Jason Childs, Jeff Divine and Warren Bolster; skateboard gurus J. Grant Brittain and Jon Humphries; acclaimed mountain bike photographer Sterling Lorence; ski & snowboard legends Kevin Zacher, Eric Berger, Paul Morrison, Blake Jorgenson, Mark Gallup, Scott Markewitz, Dave Heath, Vianney Tisseau and Mattias Fredriksson, among others.

Tickets for the gala event are $20 and available online at www.whistler2007.com/2007/estore

The five finalists are..

Peter Taras – San Clemente based Taras comes by his boho-creative blood legitimately. His grandfather was a revolutionist photographer who fought the reds and was hung by Stalin. Having worked as Photo Editor for Transworld Surf Magazine since he was 24 means Taras spends more time in the editing suite than out shooting, and his brain is full of shot-lists still to be captured. Prior to his reign at Surf, he was the youngest photo editor Surfing Magazine had ever hired, and managed the mag’s photo agency. He’s been recognized as one of the West Coast’s best water photographers.

Endre Løvaas – This 36 year old Norwegian says he has no plans to quit his day job as Marketing Manager and Senior Photographer at Fri Flyt, Norway’s biggest ski and snowboard mag to focus solely on photography. “Shooting action sports is a small world with many photographers competing for a few pages of space, so you either have to be really dedicated or really talented.” He claims he’s neither, but just likes capturing the action with good friends. He’s shot with Matchstick Productions and produced images that have been published all over the world.

Nick Hamilton– He’s got the mongrel accent of a half Finnish, half British, half American guy, with multiple seasons in the French Alps under his belt. Currently photo editor at TransWorld SNOWboarding magazine, the 29 year old shutter-veteran edited British snowboard mag White Lines before moving to Cardiff, SoCal to take up his current role. There, he earned TransWord a Henry R Luce Cover of the Year special citation. And still can’t surf worth a damn.

Jeff Curtes – Boulder-based Curtes is the Principal Photographer for Burton Snowboards, and has been tripping around the world shooting for Burton since his big break in 1994. He has a degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a single credit in photojournalism from the Agricultural Journalism department and a stash of childhood memories of snowboarding with his brother Joe in the backwoods of the Wisconsin countryside.

Jody Morris – Before Jody Morris took up photography, Canadian skateboarders were rarely represented in the major magazines. Vancouver-bred Morris, who lives more out of a suitcase these days, changed that. He spent a 10 year stint as senior photographer for Transworld Skateboarding magazine, and has freelanced for almost every major skateboard magazine in the world, as well as Men’s Fitness, Transworld Snowboarding and shooting a host of skateboarding's most iconic and influential ad campaigns, such as DC Shoes, Etnies, Adio Footwear, Quicksilver, Nixon, World Industries, Dakine, and Tony Hawk Inc. These days he is the in-house photographer and media director for the newly revived Plan B skateboards.

Cat Skiing Vacation North of Whistler

LOST AND FOUND is the story of the extraordinary season of 2006.07 as seen through the eyes of world-class skiers and snowboarders. With global drought persisting and ski resorts closing around the world, athletes are forced to follow the snow, sending them deep into the uncharted north country of Alaska and Canada – including of course – the Whistler area. Filmed almost entirely in North America, LOST AND FOUND is a testament to the terrain and conditions that only exist in the Western Hemisphere.

It wouldn’t be complete without mind-blowing performances by some of our favourite Whistler athletes, Ian McIntosh, Dana Flahr, Kye Petersen, and Victoria Jealouse. McIntosh returns to try one-upping the films best breakthrough performance in last year’s film – his own – while Flahr is pumped on his return from injuries, and it shows. Once again, the Whistler crew pretty much shows the pros how we rock here in Whistler, and well, how last winter rocked us.

This film will take you into the vast, unexplored Tordrillo Mountains of Alaska, proving that some of the best big mountain riding in the world is still completely undiscovered. Athletes take advantage of the bountiful winter in British Columbia, hit disturbing park features in Aspen and score over-the-head powder pillows at Skeena Heliskiing. The winter of 2007 was feast or famine; LOST AND FOUND documents the feast.
