Tragic Avalanche on Manaslu - Glen Plake Alive, Others Missing
Tragic news is working its way around the skiing and mountaineering communities today. It has been reported that a large avalanche hit Camp 3 on Mt Manaslu. While reports vary, several people have been killed and more are missing. American freeskiing pioneer (and legend) Glen Plake is alive, while his climbing/skiing partners Greg Costa and Remy Lecluse are both reported as missing. Hard news to swallow for the Chamonix ski mountaineering community after the large avalanche that killed several people on Mt Blanc earlier this summer. (lead image credit SwitchbackTravel.com). One news report from Nepal reports 9 people killed and six missing.
Canadian skier Greg Hill also has a team of climbers on the mountain, and they are reportedly all OK. And contrary to one report, Eric Hjorleifson is NOT anywhere near Nepal. He is alive and well in Canada.
The best source of information will likely be Trey Cook's EpicTV article. He knows Plake's party well, and has communicated with him directly.
