After one of the most amazing ski seasons of ALL TIME, you'd think the fun would be over by late May. But you'd be wrong. You can't forget about the most awesome day of the year. The day that trumps all ski days. The day that makes all other days look like wimpy training days. Yep... Gaper Day. And Gaper Day 2011 on Blackcomb was no exception, taking progression of progression to new levels once again.

Despite Blackcomb closing on a Monday this year, Gapers turned up in hordes to celebrate the end of an amazing season in style. The annual day of revelry has come a long way since our first Gaper Day back in 98, growing every year. The crowd at ZigZag pond said it all. The little 20ft long pond had literally hundreds of Gapers gathering at it all afternoon for an expression session like none other.

Some of the days highlights? There's too many too fit them on a page, but a few gooder's include:

  • the headless horsemen rappelling all over the place
  • the impromptu snowball fight with the random topless dudes found in the woods
  • mono-ski front flips on cafe cliffs
  • the world's first mono-ski / snowblade combo 2-man tandem superpipe session (aka 2 snowbladers clipped into the same mono-ski in the middle
  • naked people at the pond
  • carnage at the pond
  • tail-bone crushing disasters at the end of the cement stairs
  • and the list goes on.

Gaper Day in Whistler is now officially a phenomenon. A beast of it's own. Doglotion.com can continue to hype it up and promote it, but can nolonger take credit for the ridiculousness that ensues. Nor can we fully document all the retarded awesomeness of the day. That would take many cameras and many arms. The annual Gaper Day short film will once again world premiere this summer or fall, but we'll also do our best to catch all the other documentation we find online and share it with y'all.

To start, you can't miss the hilarious Gaper Day photo essay on The Chive (yes Gaper Day has hit the mainstream), or more of Nadia's photos in her Newschoolers article about Gaper Day.

There's 300+ days until Gaper Day 2012, start training now...
