We're not there on the scene ourselves, but sounds like the Juniors are having a good time at RED Mountain Resort this week for The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships (JUNIORS). Day 1 saw the qualifiers for the 7-11 and 12-14 year old competitors and day 2 for 15-18 year old competitors in the freeskiing event. Here's the update from the resort...

“It was amazing to see the athletes ski within their abilities and it was an impressive display of athleticism. The future of freeskiing is looking really good! ” noted an enthused Jeff Holden, the Canadian Open’s Head Judge. “As for the finals, we’ll see 93 athletes compete. It is the largest field of competitors I’ve seen in the 12 years of judging these events. It is a testament to the growth of the sport. The finals will be a great show.”

“We’ve seen a lot more skiers from western North America than we have in the past and we’re pleased how well the event has gone. This is a great stepping stone event for all aspiring freeskiers. It gives them a taste of the freeskiing community and competition. “ noted Mika Hakkola, RED Mountain Resort’s Marketing and Communications Manager.

Saturday, January 14th will see all qualified athletes compete in The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships finals. There will be 93 athletes with competition starting at 8:30am on Links Line. The competitor’s banquet and awards ceremony will start at 5:00pm in RED’s daylodge .

The senior event, scheduled to start on January 18th, has seen 60 athletes registered so far and with more anticipated. With the weather forecast calling for snow starting early next week, the conditions for the senior event look favorable. As an “Open” event, anyone over the age of 19 can register for competition. The senior event will see a cash purse up for grabs. For more  information on The North Face Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships go to: www.canadianopenfreeskiing.com.
