Snowday - Day 2

Today was a mixed day on Whistler mountain, with 51cm falling overnight recorded at pig alley station, which is located mid mountain at 1650m. The freezing level seems to have risen to just above mid station which means rain for the valley for now, however the stats for the upper mountain were quite amazing, 51cm overnight! November 16th! The weather is reported to be wet all week, lets just hope the freezing level drops. The gondola ride was interesting with high winds on exposed areas. As it was a near white out with winds blowing around a lot of snow we headed for some concealed areas around the tree areas, lots of fun snow to bounce around on, however it was very heavy and wet which made for a very tiring ride for snowboarders anyway. The common trend today was a cartwheel followed by a mouthful of snow and 20 minutes digging out of waist high snow. The groomers made for some great riding, the snow was wet which is great to get your edges into for some wide turns. The avalanche advisory is reporting size 2 slides were produced on testing this morning, and set the alpine avalanche rating to extreme and high for the treeline due to the amount of new snow. Not a good time to make a hike into the high alpine. The high winds dropped down a little but the snow was persistent, after a tiring couple of laps we decided to call it early apre at GLC. - whistler24.com
